Leonid Meteor Shower
17 Nov. 2018

This attempt to photograph the Leonid shower turned out to be a bust due to partly cloudy weather (emphasis less on "partly" and more on "cloudy").

This shot of the ring around the moon (caused by high-altitude ice crystals) is an attempt to make lemonade with the lemons provided for the night. The star visible at the 3 o'clock position of the ring is the planet Mars. The Moon appears to be full because of the long exposure, but was actually only half-lit (~ 1st quarter phase).

Above is one of only 3 meteors (1 not a Leonid) captured all night!

To the upper left of the meteor is the Big Dipper. At the upper right of the meteor is the partially shrouded constellation Leo.
